Panda Paddle 2022

I became "eco-lit" in 1970 during the very first Earth Day. My high school science teacher really helped me learn more about the concerns even back then. I went to UC Davis with a dual major of Environmental Studies & Computer Science

My career included stints with the Cal Air Resources Board, Cal Dept. of Wildlife and Aerojet Environmental. I now am self-employed in internet marketing and just launched a new division of my company BlazeYourBrand.com. One of my motto is "Be Calm, Paddle On"

And so, I am WAY excited about this "Panda Paddle" because it

  • Melds two of my passions (environmental stewardship and business support)
  • Let's me join up with a group of like-minded planetary citizens (it takes a village...)
  • And by a HUGE quirk of serendipity, I will be on the island of Kauai on vacation (so (boat) loads of paddle opportunities!) So I need your help to decide (see below)

From August 12-21, I will join with nature lovers from all across the country as we paddle separately, but together, as part of World Wildlife Fund's Panda Paddle Virtual Event.

Anini Beach

Anini Beach is arguably the largest protected, navigable stretch of coastline in all Hawaii. This is a magnificent destination for kayakers. You’ll miles of shallow water as you glide above fish, turtles, and reef - all easily visible from your vantage point in the boat. This calm experience is made possible by a barrier reef protecting the coast from the rougher waters of the open ocean. You’ll see waves crashing harmlessly against this protective reef in the distance and seeing them breaking so far off only contributes to the feeling that you are in a sanctuary of nature’s making.

Wailua River

Wailua River is the most popular kayaking destination on Kauai, and it’s easy to see why. The word “Wailua” means two waters and the river is made of two streams which branch apart as you kayak up. Take the right fork to get to secret falls. You’ll find a rocky beach (big smooth rocks) where you can leave your kayak as you continue on foot - you’re in for a decent hike, and shoes are recommended!

Hanalei Stream

Hanalei is an undeniably special place. The town hugs a very large and beautiful bay which is feed freshwater by Hanalei stream. The cool, calm water is collected in the mountains and brought to this gentle river. Once you’ve embarked you follow a bend in the river which, as you make your way around, reveals a stunning view of the mountain in the distance, often with high narrow waterfalls coming down as if from the sky itself.

Kalihiwai River

Launch from Kalihiwai beach, and while the surf crashes behind you, leisurely paddle your kayak or paddle board up into the tranquility of the gorgeous Kaliiwai River.  Swimming pool conditions abound (only the dinosaurs are missing!) while you wind your way through Kauai’s enchanted lush greenery for the next mile.  When the river becomes too shallow, leave your equipment behind on the shore and walk a few hundred yards to a stunning 3-tiered waterfall.

Kalapaki Beach & Huleia River

Kalapaki Beach is located inside Nawiliwili Bay. The Bay offers protection from much of the wind and waves beyond. Launch your kayak from the sandy beach and enjoy a beautiful paddle. For those wanting more, you can paddle to the south side of the bay and follow the mountains inland along the Huleia River. This paddle is a great way to enjoy the mountains and wildlife as you wind your way through the Huleia estuary. This nature preserve is home to many protected species of birds and offers a serene experience
